Rare Vintage Leisure Caravan
Circa late 1920s - 1930s

Pre WWII motor drawn leisure caravan, circa late *1920s / 1930s, now available as a
restoration project. In remarkable condition for its age having been dry stored & untouched for over 50 years by it's 2 previous owners. Paper evidence associated with the van indicates it was used by Romany travellers in 1961 in the hop picking fields of Kent.
*(Date source verified by experts/restorers at Beaulieu Motor Museum & UK Vardo Heritage workshops).
Clearly this caravan's been built by a professional coach builder, working to earlier, traditional, pennyboard style, traditionally used on earlier horse drawn Romany vardos and Showman living vans, at a time when modern curvaceous paneled styled vans were the up and coming fashion.
Chiefly made from high quality Douglas Fir timber, with oak or ash under frame, this caravan was more than likely built as a one off for a customer which was common practice for many decades amongst coach builders & wheelwrights, building vans to customers personal requirements.
The axle, springs / wheel hubs (date stamped 1922) are from an early Morris Oxford, bull nosed vehicle, on its original artillery spoke wheels, which have been recently restored with tube rubber tyres, (see bottom photo as not showing in the main body photographs). The 'A' frame (tow bar), believed to be made of oak, seems to be the only major section requiring more detailed restoration.
Barely any rot is evident. The interior is paneled throughout with mahogany furniture, brass & iron wear. The unusual double bow fronted roof is in excellent condition, still with it's original calico canvas covering over the matchboard (t&g), again a traditional roof covering used on all earlier horse & steam drawn living vans. The floor is solid with very few areas overall that require repair.
This is a 2 room caravan (separated by closing door),
a living area with a bench seat and a bedroom with a foldout double bed and wardrobe.
The main van body is 14'4'' long, 6'2'' wide and 7ft high approx.
A unique opportunity to acquire a project vintage caravan, with medium to light restoration work to complete.
