A Rare Original
William 'Bill' Wright
Renowned for his exquisite Bowtop waggons, William 'Bill' Wright also built Ledge and even rarer Reading-style vardos. This is one of only two Reading-style waggons that he built believed to be in existence today and was once part of the prestigious William Lee Collection, North of England.
Probably the most widely travelled Gypsy caravan, it started early Romany life meandering throughout the British countryside before eventually becoming part of the W.L.Collection. After leaving this collection, it stayed in private ownership in the UK until around 2002/3 when an arranged sale took it to US, Mexico. There it was owned for nearly 10yrs by billionaire Joanne Hearst, the grand daughter of US press magnate William Randolph Hearst ("Citizen Kane"), bought for her villa in Spain. The caravan was recently fully restored a few years ago. Joanne's name proudly displayed on the front door above Bill Wright's trademark, carved sunflower design. Sadly Joanne passed away in 2011 and the caravan was purchased by a Spanish Gypsy, from whom the present owner acquired it.
Beautifully finished in crimson lake and flashed with 24ct gold leaf. Heavy acanthus scrolls enhance the crownboards front & rear. Curvaceously carved & pierced porch brackets surrounded by splashes of colour, where carvings weave together with wandering scrolls and steady finelines. The underworks display the same craftsmasters hand in every sense, a rich cream base embellished with gold leaf, floral green flourish and red lined chamfer work throughout.
An excellent opportunity to invest in an outstanding quality waggon.
